What's included on each word cloud
Every sheet is a full page with a name and date line at the top and your words packed into the shape you chose, which is itself drawn as a light border you can colour along or cut out. In outline mode each letter is drawn hollow — real letterforms, not a font trick — so the page doubles as a colouring sheet, and that is the version worth printing rather than screenshotting. Word sizes come straight from how often each word appears, common words like “the” are left out, and no two words ever overlap. Your text is turned into a PDF inside your own browser, so a class's words never leave the device.
Ways to use a printable word cloud
- Kind words. Ask a class for words about one child, paste the answers, print it as a heart, and let them colour it. It is the single best use of this page and it takes about four minutes.
- End of topic. Paste the vocabulary from a unit and hand it out as a colouring page in the last lesson — colouring a word is a surprisingly good way to re-read it.
- Spelling lists. Type the week's words and print the star. Words you want largest, type twice — size is frequency.
- What is this passage about? Paste a page of a text before reading it and ask the class to predict the subject from the biggest words. Then paste a second passage and compare.
- Goal setting and awards. A star of a child's own goals, or of the words their class chose for them, is a better certificate than a certificate.
- Display boards. Solid mode, rectangle shape, and the largest word count gives a dense poster that reads from across a room.
Customization options
Your words
A list or a passage — both work, because the generator counts word frequencies either way. Capital letters are ignored when counting, so Reading and reading are one word, and punctuation is stripped off the ends. About a hundred common English words are left out so they don't dominate the page. To force a word to be biggest, type it more than once.
Shape
Rectangle, circle, heart, or star. The words are packed inside the shape and the shape itself is printed as a light border. A heart suits kind-words and Mother's Day clouds, a star suits goals and awards, and the rectangle fits the most words on one page.
Letters
Outline letters are drawn hollow for colouring in — this is the default and the reason the page is worth printing. Solid letters give you the plain display copy. Switching between them keeps exactly the same cloud, so you can print both from one set of words.
Words on the page
Up to 10, 15, 25, or 40 distinct words. Fewer words means bigger letters, which matters if the sheet is going to be coloured in by a five-year-old; 40 gives you a dense poster. Whatever the ceiling, the most frequent words in your text are the ones drawn.
