How to use this handwriting worksheet maker

Type any text — a sentence, spelling words, or a child's favorite phrase — then pick print or cursive and a line height. The preview updates instantly and shows the exact sheet you'll get: your text traced in light gray on the first lines, blank practice guides below. Click Download PDF and print at 100% scale — no account, no watermark.

What's included in these practice sheets

Each sheet is a US Letter page (prints on A4 too) of classic three-line handwriting rules: top line, dashed midline, baseline, and a descender line. Your text appears once in traceable gray letters, then the rest of the page is blank guide lines for independent copies. Longer text wraps onto more guide rows — and more pages — automatically, and an empty text box gives you a full page of blank handwriting paper.

Tips for handwriting practice

Customization options

Practice text

Any text up to several sentences. Each line you enter starts on its own traced row, so you can stack spelling words or practice phrases one per line. Leave it empty for blank handwriting paper.

Handwriting style

Print (manuscript) uses clear schoolbook letterforms — the style taught in pre-K through 1st grade. Cursive uses traditional US school cursive with fully joined letters, the style most American workbooks introduce around 2nd or 3rd grade.

Line height

Small, medium, or large guide rows. Large suits beginners building motor control; medium matches standard kindergarten paper; small fits older students working on neat, compact writing.

Frequently asked questions

What age should a child start handwriting practice?

Most children are ready for structured handwriting practice at ages 4 to 5, once they can control a pencil and copy basic shapes. Before that, focus on tracing lines and curves. Print (manuscript) letters usually come first in pre-K and kindergarten; cursive is typically introduced around 2nd or 3rd grade.

Should kids learn print or cursive first?

Nearly all US schools teach print (manuscript) first, in pre-K through 1st grade, and introduce cursive in 2nd or 3rd grade. Start with the print style here for a beginner; switch the style option to cursive for an older child learning joined writing.

What do the three lines on handwriting paper mean?

Each practice row has a top line, a dashed midline, and a baseline, plus a descender line below. Tall letters reach from the baseline to the top line, small letters fit between the baseline and the dashed midline, and letters like g, j, p, q and y hang down to the descender line. These sheets use the same rule found on kindergarten handwriting paper.

Why is the first line gray?

The gray text is a tracing model: your child writes directly over the light-gray letters to learn the shapes, then copies the same text from memory on the blank guide lines below. Tracing builds the motor pattern; writing on the blank lines locks it in.

What cursive style do these worksheets use?

The cursive option uses a traditional US school cursive in the Zaner-Bloser/Palmer lineage — fully joined letters with looped ascenders, the style most American cursive workbooks teach. It is rendered from Playwrite US Trad, a font designed specifically for handwriting education.

Do you have D'Nealian style worksheets?

Not yet. D'Nealian is a proprietary handwriting program, and no openly licensed D'Nealian-style font currently exists that we could legally embed in your PDFs. These sheets offer standard print (manuscript) and traditional US cursive; a slanted pre-cursive style may be added if a properly licensed font becomes available.

Can I make a blank handwriting practice sheet?

Yes. Delete the text and download — you get a full page of empty three-line handwriting guides at your chosen line height, the same as store-bought handwriting paper. Pick large lines for beginners or small lines for older students.

What paper size do these worksheets print on?

Worksheets are generated as US Letter (8.5 × 11 inches) by default, which also prints cleanly on A4 paper. Print at 100% scale (no fit-to-page shrinking) so the guide lines keep their intended height.

Is this handwriting worksheet generator really free?

Yes. Every sheet is completely free — no signup, no email required, no watermarks, and no limit on how many worksheets you can generate and download. The PDF is created right in your browser.
