4th grade · ages 9–10
Fourth grade is where the algorithms arrive. Multi-digit multiplication and long division are both multi-step procedures with a lot of places to go wrong, and both assume the times tables are already automatic. If they are not, that is the thing to fix first — no amount of long-division practice compensates for stopping to work out 6 × 7.
Remainders also appear this year, which is the first time division stops coming out neatly. It is worth treating as its own topic rather than as a footnote to division facts.

Long division and remainders
Two separate difficulties. Learn the bracket procedure on problems that divide evenly, then add remainders once the steps are automatic.

Cursive becomes the handwriting rather than a subject, and puzzles can carry real vocabulary.
Tips for 4th grade practice
- If long division is going badly, test the times tables in isolation first. Nine times out of ten the algorithm is fine and the fact recall is not.
- Teach the long-division steps on problems that divide evenly. Adding remainders at the same time makes it impossible to tell which part went wrong.
- Squared paper is not a crutch at this level — misaligned partial products are one of the most common sources of wrong answers in multi-digit multiplication.
- Ask what the remainder means in the context of the question. Whether you round up, round down or keep it depends on what is being shared out.
- Estimate before calculating. A child who expects roughly 60 will notice an answer of 600; one who does not will write it down.

When do kids learn long division?
Fourth grade is the usual introduction in US classrooms, starting with single-digit divisors. Two-digit divisors normally follow in fifth grade once the procedure is secure.
My 4th grader struggles with long division. What should I do?
Check the times tables first — long division breaks down far more often because of slow fact recall than because of the procedure. If recall is fine, isolate the steps on evenly-dividing problems before introducing remainders.
What does the remainder mean in a division problem?
It is what is left over when the sharing is done. What you do with it depends entirely on the question: sometimes you round up, sometimes you drop it, and sometimes the remainder is the answer being asked for.
