How to use this lined paper generator

Pick a paper style, a guide-row size, and your paper size — the preview updates instantly and shows the exact sheet you'll get. Choose wide, college, or narrow ruled for notebook paper; handwriting for guide rows with a dotted midline; or story paper for a drawing box above the lines. Click Download PDF and print at 100% scale (not fit-to-page) so every ruling measures exactly what it says. No account, no watermark, no limits.

What's included on each sheet

Each sheet is a single full page on US Letter or A4. Ruled spacing is computed in exact printer's points — wide ruled is exactly 11/32 inch, college ruled 9/32 inch, narrow ruled 1/4 inch — and the lines fill the page as whole rows so you never get a clipped partial line at the edge. Handwriting paper draws a top line, a dotted midline, and a solid baseline with a descender space below; story paper adds an empty drawing box across the top. Every sheet keeps a Name and Date line at the top, and ruled styles can add the classic left margin line.

Tips for printing lined paper

Customization options

Paper style

Wide, college, and narrow ruled draw evenly spaced single lines at their exact standard spacing. Handwriting draws guide rows — top line, dotted midline, and baseline — for forming letters. Story paper adds a drawing box above the guide rows so children can illustrate and then write.

Guide-row size

Large, medium, or small guide rows for the handwriting and story styles. Large rows suit pre-K and kindergarten hands; medium fits grades one and two; small suits grades two and three as handwriting shrinks. Ruled styles use their fixed standard spacing instead.

Paper size

US Letter (8.5 × 11 inches) or A4 (210 × 297 mm). The page refills with whole lines on whichever sheet you choose while the ruling spacing itself stays exact.

Margin line

Turn the left margin line on or off for the ruled styles. On, you get the classic notebook margin 1.25 inches from the edge; off, the lines run full width. Handwriting and story paper leave it off so the guide rows span the whole sheet.

Frequently asked questions

What ruling sizes of lined paper can I print?

Three standard rulings: wide ruled (11/32 inch, about 8.7 mm between lines), college ruled (9/32 inch, about 7.1 mm), and narrow ruled (1/4 inch, 6.35 mm). Each spacing is calculated in exact printer's points, so the lines really measure that distance when you print at 100% scale.

How do I make sure the lines print at the exact spacing?

Print the PDF at 100% scale (also called "Actual size") and turn off any "Fit to page" or "Shrink to printable area" option in your printer dialog. Fit-to-page scaling shrinks the lines a few percent so wide-ruled paper no longer measures 11/32 inch between lines.

What is the difference between wide ruled and college ruled?

The gap between the lines. Wide ruled leaves 11/32 inch between lines and suits younger writers with larger handwriting. College ruled tightens that to 9/32 inch, fitting more lines on the page — the standard for middle school, high school, and note-taking. Narrow ruled is tighter still at 1/4 inch.

What is handwriting paper with a dotted midline?

Handwriting paper draws guide rows instead of single lines: a top line, a dotted midline, and a solid baseline, with space below for letter tails. Children rest letters on the baseline, keep lowercase letters at the dotted midline, and reach tall letters to the top line. Pick large rows for pre-K and kindergarten or smaller rows as handwriting matures.

What is story paper?

Story paper puts an empty drawing box at the top of the page with handwriting guide rows below it. Children draw a picture in the box and then write about it on the lines — the classic kindergarten and first-grade format for connecting drawing and writing.

Does the lined paper have a margin line?

Yes, on the ruled styles. You can turn on a left margin line — the red vertical rule 1.25 inches from the edge that marks where writing begins, just like a school notebook. Turn it off for a clean full-width sheet. Handwriting and story paper leave the margin off so the guide rows run edge to edge.

Can I print on A4 as well as US Letter?

Yes. Choose US Letter (8.5 × 11 inches) or A4 (210 × 297 mm) in the paper-size option and the page is refilled with whole lines that fit the sheet. The ruling spacing itself stays exact on both sizes.

Is this lined paper generator really free?

Yes. Every sheet is completely free — no signup, no email required, no watermarks, and no limit on how many pages you generate, download, or print.
