Fifth grade finishes what fourth grade started. Long division extends to two-digit divisors, multiplication extends to two-digit by two-digit with two partial products to add, and both demand that the underlying facts are fully automatic — there is no room to work out 13 × 4 in the middle of estimating a quotient digit.
This is also the year where careless arithmetic starts costing more than misunderstanding. The procedures are long enough that a single slipped digit invalidates several minutes of correct work, which is why alignment and estimation are worth as much practice as the methods themselves.

Tips for 5th grade practice
- Estimate the answer before starting a long division. Knowing it should be about 30 catches a misplaced digit that produces 3 or 300.
- For two-digit divisors, write out the first few multiples of the divisor down the side of the page. It converts estimating into reading off a list.
- Most two-digit multiplication errors are the forgotten placeholder zero on the second partial product. Check that one thing first.
- Keep a short fact-fluency drill in the week even now — every fifth-grade procedure sits on top of the times tables.
- Print at 100% scale when using graph paper for measurement work, or the squares will not be the size they claim.

Why is division with 2-digit divisors so hard?
Because each step needs an estimate rather than a recalled fact. With a single-digit divisor a child knows the multiples; with 37 as a divisor they have to judge how many times it fits, check, and adjust — which is genuinely harder than the algorithm.
How can I help with two-digit divisors?
Have the child write the first few multiples of the divisor down the side of the page before starting. It turns the estimating step into reading from a list and removes most of the difficulty.
