Second grade is the regrouping year. Carrying and borrowing are the first genuinely procedural things a child meets in maths — there is a sequence of steps, and getting one out of order produces a wrong answer that looks reasonable. That makes second grade the year where deliberate, separated practice pays off most.
The sheets below split regrouping from non-regrouping on purpose. A mixed page lets a child coast on the easy problems; a page where every single question carries is the one that actually builds the skill.

Master no-carrying first, then move to a sheet where every problem carries. Separating them is the whole trick — mixed pages hide which one is the problem.

Multiplication proper is a third-grade topic, but skip counting and the smallest facts belong here — they make the times tables feel familiar rather than new.

Handwriting shifts from forming letters to sustaining them — the challenge is keeping size and spacing steady over a whole paragraph.

Bigger grids and backwards words. A second grader can scan systematically, which an earlier child cannot.
Tips for 2nd grade practice
- If regrouping is going wrong, check the alignment before reteaching the method — half of all carrying errors are really handwriting errors with digits drifting between columns.
- Half-inch graph paper with one digit per square fixes that alignment problem almost immediately.
- Use the no-regrouping sheet as a confidence reset when a child stalls, then go straight back to the regrouping one.
- Skip counting aloud by 2s, 5s and 10s during the school run costs nothing and makes third-grade times tables far less alien.
- Ask the child to explain one carried digit out loud. Being able to say what the little 1 means is the difference between a procedure and understanding.

How do I help a child who keeps getting carrying wrong?
