Free 2nd Grade Worksheets

2nd grade · ages 7–8

Second grade is the regrouping year. Carrying and borrowing are the first genuinely procedural things a child meets in maths — there is a sequence of steps, and getting one out of order produces a wrong answer that looks reasonable. That makes second grade the year where deliberate, separated practice pays off most.

The sheets below split regrouping from non-regrouping on purpose. A mixed page lets a child coast on the easy problems; a page where every single question carries is the one that actually builds the skill.

What children work on in 2nd grade

Regrouping, split into two skills

Master no-carrying first, then move to a sheet where every problem carries. Separating them is the whole trick — mixed pages hide which one is the problem.

Getting ready for multiplication

Multiplication proper is a third-grade topic, but skip counting and the smallest facts belong here — they make the times tables feel familiar rather than new.

Reading and writing

Handwriting shifts from forming letters to sustaining them — the challenge is keeping size and spacing steady over a whole paragraph.

Puzzles

Bigger grids and backwards words. A second grader can scan systematically, which an earlier child cannot.

Frequently asked questions

What math do 2nd graders learn?

Two-digit addition and subtraction with regrouping is the centrepiece, alongside place value to 1,000, skip counting, telling time and money. Three-digit column work usually appears near the end of the year.

What is regrouping in 2nd grade math?

Regrouping is the formal name for carrying and borrowing — exchanging ten ones for a ten, or a ten for ten ones, so a column addition or subtraction can be completed. It is the first multi-step procedure most children meet.

How do I help a child who keeps getting carrying wrong?

First check whether the digits are lining up. A great many carrying errors are alignment problems, and printing the work on half-inch graph paper with one digit per square resolves them without any reteaching.

Do 2nd graders learn multiplication?

Not formally in most US classrooms — it is a third-grade topic. Second grade builds towards it with skip counting and repeated addition, so a light sheet of 1–5 facts is a reasonable preview rather than a requirement.

Are these 2nd grade worksheets free to print?

Yes. No signup, no email, no watermark, no limits. Everything generates in your browser and downloads as a standard PDF with an answer key on page two of every math sheet.

What sight words are taught in 2nd grade?

The Dolch second-grade list — 46 words including "because", "together" and "upon". By this point most children are decoding well, so the list is more about speed of recognition than about learning new words.

Should handwriting still be practised in 2nd grade?

Yes, but the goal has changed. Letters are already known; the work is keeping size, slant and spacing consistent across a whole paragraph, which is why longer passages on narrower lines are the useful sheet now.

Can I choose how many problems are on a page?

Yes. Every math generator has a problem-count control, and the maximum adapts to the layout — tall formats like long division fit fewer problems on a page than a horizontal row does.
