What's included on each worksheet
Every sheet is a full page with a name and date line at the top, numbered problems, and a matching answer key on page two. The two picture worksheets draw real fraction models — a bar cut into equal vertical parts, or a pie cut into equal sectors — with the shaded parts in a light tint that prints cleanly and can still be written over. The four computation worksheets print each problem with the blank in place, with room underneath to show working. Answers are given in lowest terms and are never mixed numbers: addition problems never pass one whole and subtraction problems never go below zero, which is what keeps every key on the page defensible.
Tips for teaching fractions
- Start with bars before circles. The parts of a bar sit side by side and can be compared by length; judging a sector by eye is a separate skill, and stacking the two at once is what makes fractions feel arbitrary.
- Say the denominator as “how many equal parts the whole was cut into” every single time. Most early fraction errors are really a child counting the shaded parts and ignoring what they are out of.
- Print an identify sheet and a shade sheet with the same settings and hand them out back to back — reading a picture and producing one are different directions of the same idea, and children are usually much stronger at one than the other.
- Use the equivalent-fractions sheet before the comparing sheet. Comparing 3/4 and 2/3 is far easier once rewriting both over twelfths is automatic.
- Keep denominators at 6 or below until identifying is quick. A sheet of twelfths is a fluency exercise, not an introduction.
- When adding with like denominators, ask what stays the same. Children who add both numerators and denominators are pattern-matching whole number addition, and drawing the answer on a bar settles it faster than a rule does.

What students do
Six problem types. Identify the fraction prints a shaded shape with a blank to write the fraction on. Shade the fraction reverses it: the fraction is given and the shape is empty. Equivalent fractions asks for the missing numerator over a stated denominator. Compare fractions asks for <, >, or = between a pair. Add and subtract with like denominators are the computation sheets.
Visual model
Fraction bars or fraction circles, on the two picture worksheets. Switching between them redraws the same fractions in the other shape rather than generating a new sheet, so you can give a child both representations of the identical problem set. The computation types draw no picture, and the control is disabled for them.
Problems per page
4, 6, 9, or 12. Fewer problems means larger models, which are much easier for younger students to read and to shade accurately; 12 gives you a full drill page for students who have the concept and need the fluency.
Denominators up to
4, 6, 8, 10, or 12. This is the difficulty dial: no fraction on the sheet will have a denominator above the number you pick. Halves, thirds, and quarters make an introduction sheet; tenths and twelfths make a fourth-grade review.
Paper size
US Letter (8.5 × 11 inches) or A4 (210 × 297 mm). The problem grid is recomputed to fit whichever sheet you choose, so nothing is stretched or clipped.

Is there an answer key?

Are the answers reduced to lowest terms?
Computed answers are, with one deliberate exception. Addition and subtraction answers are always given in lowest terms, so 2/6 + 2/6 is keyed as 2/3 and an answer worth one whole is written as 1. But an identify-the-fraction answer is not reduced: a bar with 2 of 4 parts shaded is keyed as 2/4, because the picture states the denominator and reducing it would be answering a different question than the one the picture asks.
Do the answers ever come out as mixed numbers?
No. Addition problems are built so the two numerators never sum past the denominator, and subtraction problems so the answer is never negative or zero. Every answer on these sheets is therefore a proper fraction or a whole 1, which keeps the key defensible without needing to teach mixed numbers first.
What grade level are fraction worksheets for?
Identifying and shading fractions with bars or circles is typically late second or third grade. Equivalent fractions and comparing fractions are third and fourth grade. Adding and subtracting with like denominators is usually fourth grade. The denominator ceiling lets you set the difficulty directly rather than picking by grade label.
What is the difference between fraction bars and fraction circles?
A fraction bar is a rectangle cut into equal vertical parts; a fraction circle is a pie cut into equal sectors. Bars are easier to read because the parts line up side by side, and most curricula start there. Circles are harder to judge by eye, especially with denominators above 6, which is exactly why they are worth practicing once bars are secure. Switching between them redraws the same fractions as a different picture, so you can hand out both.
Will I get the same worksheet if I come back?
Yes. Each combination of problem type, problem count, and denominator ceiling always generates the same sheet, so you can print a class set today and another identical set next week. Change any of those settings and you get a genuinely different set of problems, not the same ones reshuffled. Switching between bars and circles deliberately keeps the same fractions and only redraws them.
