Every sheet is a full page with a name and date line at the top. A data worksheet prints the graph with its own title, then numbered comprehension questions with a write-on rule under each, and a matching answer key on page two with every answer written in blue. Five graphs. A bar graph measures each category against a numbered scale. A pictograph draws rows of symbols with a key, so each symbol stands for two and an odd number takes a half symbol. A line graph plots a measurement over time and joins the points up. A pie chart splits a circle into sectors sized by the data, with a legend underneath. A tally chart prints tally marks in groups of five to be counted back into numbers.

Sheet type

What the data is about

Six surveys: favourite fruit, pets at home, weather, books read, favourite sport, and how we get to school. The topic sets the category names and what the numbers count, so the questions read like a real class survey rather than like algebra. On a line graph the same topic is measured over days, weeks or months instead. The control is disabled on a blank template, which carries no data.

Bars, rows, or sectors

4, 5, or 6. Fewer categories means wider bars and larger symbols, which younger students find much easier to read and to colour accurately; six gives an older class a fuller data set to work through.

Questions

3, 4, or 5. They are ordered easy to hard, so a three-question sheet is the gentle end of the same worksheet rather than a random subset: reading a single value comes first, comparing two values next, and totalling the whole graph last.

Paper size

US Letter (8.5 × 11 inches) or A4 (210 × 297 mm). The graph and the questions are recomputed to fit whichever sheet you choose, so nothing is stretched or clipped.

What graphing worksheets can I make?

How are the answers worked out?

They are computed from the data before the graph is drawn, and the graph is drawn from the same numbers, so the picture and the key can never disagree. Questions are only asked when the data can answer them unambiguously — if two categories tie for last, the sheet simply does not ask which had the fewest.

What grade level are graphing worksheets for?

Tally charts and pictographs are usually first and second grade. Bar graphs run from second through fourth. Line graphs and pie charts are typically third grade and up, since both ask a child to read between the marked values. Fewer categories and fewer questions make any of them easier without changing the skill.

What is the difference between a bar graph and a pictograph?

A bar graph measures each category against a numbered scale, so reading it is reading a height. A pictograph uses a row of symbols with a key — here each symbol stands for two — so reading it is multiplying, and an odd number needs a half symbol. Print the same survey both ways and the key is what a child has to learn to look for.

Do the pie chart sectors add up properly?

Yes. Pie data is always generated to a total of 10, 12, 20 or 24, every one of which divides 360 degrees into whole numbers, so each sector is an exact whole number of degrees and the last one closes the circle precisely. Each sector prints its own value and the legend underneath names it.

Will I get the same worksheet if I come back?

Yes. Each combination of topic and category count always generates the same data, so you can print a class set today and another identical set next week. Switching between the bar graph, the pictograph and the tally chart deliberately keeps the same survey and only redraws it — which is exactly how you show a class that three pictures can hold one set of numbers.

What paper size do these print on?
