Tips for teaching place value
- Start with base-ten blocks before the notation. Reading a picture of hundreds, tens, and ones makes the sizes of the columns something a child can see, which is the whole idea the digits stand for.
- Say every number three ways until it is automatic: the digits, the unit form (“3 hundreds, 4 tens, 7 ones”), and the number name. Most confusion lives between the last two.
- Use the expanded-form sheet before comparing. Once a child can write 345 as 300 + 40 + 5, comparing it to 354 is a place-by-place check rather than a guess.
- The value-of-the-underlined-digit sheet catches the most common gap directly: the 4 in 345 is worth 40, not 4. A child who reads the digit and stops has understood the position but not the value.
- Keep the range at tens and ones until reading blocks is quick, then move up. A page of thousands is a fluency exercise, not an introduction, and the place value guide walks through the sequence.
- Bring decimals in as an extension of the same pattern, not a new topic: tenths and hundredths are the columns continuing to the right, and money is the version most families already own.

Do these worksheets cover decimal place value?
Yes. Switch the number range to tenths or hundredths and the expanded form, word form, place-value chart, digit-value, and compare sheets all extend past the decimal point. A place-value chart then shows a decimal point between the ones and tenths columns, expanded form reads 3 + 0.4 + 0.05, and word form reads three and forty-five hundredths.
What is expanded form?
Expanded form writes a number as the sum of what each digit is worth, so 345 becomes 300 + 40 + 5 and 3,472 becomes 3,000 + 400 + 70 + 2. It is the one notation where each digit's value is written down instead of implied, which makes it the bridge to mental addition and to regrouping. The standard-form sheet reverses it: read the sum and write the number.
What grade level are place value worksheets for?
Tens and ones and reading base-ten blocks are first and second grade; hundreds and the place-value chart are second and third grade; thousands, word form, and comparing are third grade. Decimal place value to tenths and hundredths is usually fourth and fifth grade. The number range lets you set the difficulty directly rather than picking by grade label.
