How to Teach Counting Money

Money is the first math a child uses in the real world before they can do any of it on paper. A four-year-old wants the gumball, and the machine wants two quarters — the whole subject is standing right there in front of them. That head start is also a trap: because coins feel familiar, it is easy to assume counting them is obvious, when in fact it braids together three separate skills — naming the coins, knowing what each is worth, and counting in unequal jumps — that a child has to learn one at a time.
This guide lays out the order those skills go in, from telling a dime from a nickel to counting out change, and points to where each one gets practised. Work it in sequence: every stage below assumes the one before it is solid, and the most common reason counting money will not stick is a stage that got skipped.
Start by naming the coins
Before a child can count money they have to tell the coins apart, and the four US coins are confusingly similar — all round, all silver-ish except the penny, all stamped with a face. Start with recognition alone, no values yet: lay out a penny, nickel, dime and quarter and name them until the names come automatically. Point out the one feature that fixes each in memory — the penny is the only copper one, the dime is the smallest and has a ridged edge, the quarter is the biggest, and the nickel is the thick, smooth one in between.
Bills come later and are easier, because the number is printed right on the front. A one, a five, a ten and a twenty are all a child needs at first. Handle real coins and bills, or realistic play money, rather than pictures — sorting a mixed handful into piles by kind is the whole activity, and it is worth doing until it is boring.
Learn what each coin is worth
Naming a coin and knowing its value are two different facts, and the values simply have to be memorised, because nothing about a coin's size tells you what it is worth. This is where the single biggest stumbling block in the whole subject lives: the dime is smaller than the nickel but worth twice as much. Every child assumes bigger means more, and every child has to be shown, over and over, that the dime beats the nickel despite losing the size contest. Say it out loud, hold the two coins up side by side, and come back to it often.
Anchor the four values as a set — penny 1¢, nickel 5¢, dime 10¢, quarter 25¢ — and keep returning to the idea that a coin's worth is something you know, not something you can see. Count a pile of one coin — this is skip counting
Once the values are known, counting starts with the easy case: a pile made of just one kind of coin. Counting five nickels is not counting to five — it is counting by fives: 5, 10, 15, 20, 25. This is exactly skip counting, which is why counting money and skip counting are really the same lesson wearing different clothes. Nickels are counting by 5, dimes are counting by 10, and quarters are counting by 25.
So the fastest way to make coin-counting easy is to make the underlying counts automatic first. A child who can rattle off fives and tens will count nickels and dimes without effort; the twenty-fives behind quarters are the hardest and come last. If those rhythms are shaky, spend time on skip counting by 5s, 10s and 25s before piling coins — the counting is the bottleneck, not the money. Pennies are the exception and the easy warm-up, since counting them is just counting by ones. The fives also do double duty: they are the same fives that mark five-minute steps around a clock, so this practice feeds straight into telling time.
Mix the coins: sort biggest first, then run a total
A real handful of change is mixed, and mixing is where a system pays off. Teach one procedure and stick to it: sort the pile into groups by coin, start with the largest-value coin, and keep a running total in your head as you go.
- Sort the pile into piles by coin — quarters, dimes, nickels, pennies.
- Count the quarters first: 25, 50, 75.
- Add the dimes on top of that total: 85, 95.
- Then the nickels, then the pennies last of all.
Starting big and ending with pennies means the running total only ever grows in small steps near the end, which is far easier than jumping around. This braids the skip counts together, and it is genuinely hard the first few times because the child has to switch counts midstream — from counting by tens to counting by fives without losing the total. Go slowly, keep the coins physically grouped so the eye can check the count, and do lots of small piles rather than a few big ones. Add the dollars and cents
Bills bring in dollars, and dollars and cents together introduce the decimal point and the two-column way money is written: $1.45 is one dollar and forty-five cents, and the dot keeps the two apart. Counting a mix of bills and coins is the same big-to-small routine — count the dollars first, then the coins as cents on top. The only new idea is that a hundred cents make a dollar, the same place value idea of a hundred of a small unit making one of the next, and it is worth showing with four quarters or ten dimes so the trade is concrete rather than a rule.
Adding amounts of money is ordinary column addition once the decimal points are lined up, so a child who is fluent with addition worksheets already has the mechanics — lining up the decimal is the only money-specific habit to build. The dollar sign and the point stay put; the digits add exactly as they always have.
Making change is subtraction you can count up
Making change is the last stage and the one that feels like a grown-up skill, because it is: it is the everyday use of subtraction. If something costs 70¢ and you pay with a dollar, the change is 30¢. But the way cashiers actually find change is not subtraction at all — it is counting up. Start at the price and count coins forward until you reach the amount paid: from 70¢, a nickel makes 75, a quarter makes a dollar, so the change is a nickel and a quarter.
Counting up is easier for children because it reuses the coin-counting they already have, in the direction they are used to going. Practise it both ways — as subtraction worksheets to see the arithmetic plainly, and as counting up with real coins to build the shopkeeper's instinct.
