The Frayer model is a vocabulary graphic organizer built around a single word. The word sits in the middle of the page, and four boxes around it ask the student to describe it four different ways: a definition, its characteristics, some examples, and — the part that makes the whole thing work — some non-examples. It is one sheet, it takes a few minutes, and it turns "look up the word and copy the definition" into something closer to actually understanding what the word means.

Copying a definition proves a student can copy. Filling out a Frayer model proves they can place a word: say what it is, what it is like, what counts as one, and what does not. That last question is where a shaky understanding shows itself, which is exactly why the model is worth the extra minutes. What the Frayer model is

A Frayer model is a page divided into four quadrants with the target word (or a concept) written in an oval or box at the center. Each quadrant asks a different question about that word. The power is in doing all four at once. A definition alone is abstract. Examples alone are a list. Notice that the definition is meant to be rewritten, not transcribed. A student who can restate the meaning in plain words has understood it; a student who copies has not, and the Frayer model is designed to make that difference visible on the page.

Why non-examples do the heavy lifting

Most vocabulary work stops at definition and examples. The Frayer model's real contribution is the fourth box, and it is the one to protect when time is short. Non-examples force a student to define the boundary of a concept — to decide what is nearby but still outside it — and that boundary is where real understanding lives.

A student who lists a rectangle as a non-example of a square has grasped that equal sides are the deciding trait. A student who cannot think of a single non-example usually has only a fuzzy sense of the word. The best non-examples are the near misses, not the wild ones: a rectangle teaches more than a banana, because rejecting the rectangle requires knowing the exact rule. Ask for the reason alongside each non-example — "a rectangle, because its sides are not all equal" — and the box becomes a check on the definition itself.

How to introduce it

The Frayer model looks simple and confuses students the first time anyway, usually because they mix up characteristics with examples. Introduce it as a class, not as a worksheet handed out cold:

  1. Fill one in together on the board with an easy, familiar word before anyone works alone.
  2. Do the definition box last, not first. Gathering examples and characteristics first gives students the raw material to write a definition in their own words.
  3. Model a non-example out loud, including the reason, so students hear that "close but not quite" is what you are after.
  4. Keep the boxes to phrases and short lists, not paragraphs — the model is a thinking tool, not an essay.
  5. Once the routine is familiar, let students complete one independently as they meet a new word.

Which subjects it fits

The Frayer model started in reading vocabulary and it is still strongest there, but it fits any subject with words worth pinning down:

  • English and reading — a new word from a text, or a literary term like metaphor.
  • Math — a concept word, not a number. Polygon, factor, fraction, and perimeter all reward the examples-and-non-examples treatment.
  • Science — mammal, mixture, force, cell: terms where the non-examples (a shark for mammal, a compound for mixture) do the teaching.
  • Social studies — democracy, migration, region, and other ideas that are easy to define loosely and hard to bound.

It pairs naturally with other vocabulary practice. Common mistakes to avoid

  • Confusing characteristics with examples. Characteristics are always-true traits (a square has four equal sides); examples are actual things (a chessboard cell). Students blur these constantly — name the difference explicitly.
  • Skipping non-examples. This is the box that gets left blank when time runs short, and it is the box that matters most. Cut something else first.
  • Non-examples that are too easy. A banana is not a useful non-example of a square. Push for the near miss — the rectangle — that forces the rule to the surface.

Using it to study and review

A completed Frayer model is a study card the student built themselves, and self-built notes are remembered better than handed-out ones. Keep the finished sheets and use them at review time in a few ways: cover the center word and have the student name it from the four boxes, or cover the definition box and rebuild it from the examples and characteristics.
