The four things a hand needs before it can write

Stiffer dough works the hand harder than soft dough. Homemade salt dough, or a tub left open for a day, gives real resistance where fresh commercial dough gives almost none — and a child who complains that it is hard is doing precisely the work you wanted.

When to bring in paper

Paper is not the enemy; it is just a poor first tool. Once a child can hold a crayon in their fingers and draw for a few minutes without the hand tiring, paper starts to offer something the tongs cannot — a reason to control a movement precisely, and a visible record of having done it.

Start with drawing rather than letters. Coloring pages are fine motor work in a costume: staying inside a line is control practice, and the picture rather than the performance is what the child is thinking about.   • Hold a crayon with the fingers rather than the whole fist, even if the grip is not a textbook tripod.
